Creation
I started this project in July 2021 when I needed a hand work project for a family vacation to Glacier National Park. The design is based on traditional felted wool “pennies”. The Pennies are made from appliqued and embroidered circles and stars. The circles and stars came from upcycled wool garments. Each is stitched with #5 pearl cotton.
I designed a geometric block for the final appliques once I was home from vacation. There are 25 blocks that measure about 19’’ square. Once the blocks were finished they were sewn together and a 3’’ outer border was added. The final appliqued pennies were added to the intersections for a quilt top that finishes at 98.5’’ x 98.5’’. I used the fabric line Peppercorn by Andover Fabrics for the front, back and binding.
Custom quilting includes outlining of appliqued pennies, stitched inside the large and mid-size pennies. There are feathers and leaves in the background fabric and bead board quilting in the outer border.
The batting is 100% bamboo by Winline Textiles. Thread is Superior polyester on top and Glide polyester on bottom.
Size: 98.5’’ W x 98.5’’ H
