Oriental Express
Oriental influenced fabrics are featured throughout this original design. I made 24’’ square flower blocks for the center with giant yo-yos for the flowers, melon shapes form the leaves and bias tape for the stems. Felted wool and vintage red buttons are used for the stamens. Accents of folded hexagons and ivory buttons finish the flower blocks.
Large blocks set in a four-patch setting were popular in mid-1800’s quilts. This, as well as the medallion setting, are my tribute to histories’ influence on quilting today.
The inner border has a variety of pieced star blocks. The outer border combines many beautiful oriental prints. I framed the blocks throughout the quilt with a black print to give the look of lacquered lattice work.
For the backing I used another Asian influenced print. Bamboo batting and custom quilting complete this unique and stunning quilt.
